Happy New Year to one and all. Our next meeting will be in the end of February. More on that to come. In the meanwhile, I’ve stumbled upon this somewhat dated video about what plugins were used on the mix of Nicky Minaj’s Super Bass. The moral here: as much as different vendors would have you believe the pros are using their latest and greatest, the real pros get by just fine on stuff that’s been around for ages and doesn’t cost a whole lot!

First and foremost, Kudos to Andy Edelstein for his awesome talk and Q&A session on various approaches to mixing! We’re in process of lining up other awesome speakers for next year, and guess what… you could be one of them!

Do you have a tool (DAW/synth/effect/balalaika/anything else) you’re madly in love with? Have you finished a project could take us through, so that others can learn from your awesomeness? You don’t have to use up the full two hours (although you can). And you do not have to have a Grammy or a college faculty position, like some of our previous speakers. All you have to do is shoot us a message and let us know of your interest.

But why wait for the next meeting, when we have this awesome website? Would you like a song of yours featured here? Send us a link! Have something to say on the art/science/business of music? You know what to do.

We can’t wait to hear from you. No, seriously, we can’t wait. It’s eating us up inside. Like an ulcer. Or that creature from Alien.

Peace!

Andy’s spoken to our group once before and was incredibly well received by everyone in attendance. Hearing Andy talk about mixing is like hearing Mozart talk about composing. Except not in German. You can learn more about Andy on his faculty page at Berklee.

This event is free (like all our events), and we’ll have pizza, soda, and mixing books to raffle off. Doors will open at 6:30 pm. The presentation will start at 7:00 pm. We’ll be in our usual digs at SignedOn (in Downtown Crossing). Use the form below to RSVP (required). The address will be in your confirmation email.

Our October guest is a legendary Demoscene musician and synth programmer Tammo “kb” Hinrichs.

The demoscene is a computer art subculture which evolved out of the video game cracking scene in the late nineteen-eighties. It is centered around demos, or realtime, generally non-interactive, demonstrations of prowess in graphic arts, music composition, and code. The demoscene now has its own musical ecosystem which inspired the rise of netlabels and modern chiptunes, and demosceners have created many tools, including a variety of trackers and synths for creating electronic music.

One core aspect of the demoscene is an emphasis on overcoming technological hurdles with creativity and skill. As a result, two common demo competition categories are 64 kilobyte and 4 kilobyte demos, which include visuals and music in files equivalent in size to a single page of unformatted text.

Tammo “kb” Hinrichs of Farbrausch, a coder and musician, will explain how synth programs intended to create music for 4K and 64K demos work, and discuss some of the challenges involved in syncing visuals and music.

When will all this happen? I’m glad I asked: Thursday, October 13th. Doors open at 6:30 pm (for chilling, mingling, socializing, etc). The presentation will start at 7. Important: Reservations are required. Please use the form below to register. And, if you haven’t already, join our 100% non-spam mailing list to keep up to date with everything that’s happening!

Oh, nobody in particular. Just your average, everyday, run-of-the-mill musician/engineer/producer who has worked with Brian McNight, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blidge and countless others. And yes, he will be in Boston, sharing his insight with us. Yes, free of charge. No, you’re not dreaming. Or maybe you are, but not about this part.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, September 22. The doors will open at 6:30 PM for socializing, and the presentation will start at 7:00 sharp. In his talk, Bob will talk about making of some of hits megahits, the future of music collaboration, and will answer your questions. The even will be held in downtown crossing. We will e-mail the address to all registered attendees. Registration is required. Because Bassy Bob will likely draw a crowd beyond what our space can accommodate, we are forced to cap the attendance at 50, first come first serve.

As always, we will have music production books to raffle off. We’ll also have pizza and drinks.

Use the form below to reserve your seat. If the form doesn’t work for you, you can reserve your seat here. See you soon!

If you are reading this, and I have reason to believe that you are, you have stumbled upon the very first post in the official blog of Digital Musicians Boston. Digital Musicians Boston is a group of Bostonians (and trespassers form the neighboring cities, who don’t think we notice, but we do) who are passionate about making music with computers. We use DAWs, soft synths, effects, monomes (whatever those are), and who knows what else? We track, mix, master, synthesize, equalize, modulate, convolve and a whole bunch of other things we should probably tell our doctors about. And we gather about once a month to share our war stories and receive wisdom from others. Some would say we’re kind of like a user group, but in truth, we’re much, much more awesome.

But because one monthly meeting cannot contain the full extent of our awesomeness, we have conjured up the blog you are beholding at this moment. Herein, all our members are invited to contribute their wisdom. Their favorite books, techniques, tricks, plugins, sheet music, and just about everything else. We love all feedback (of the non-hateful, non-spam kind). And if you are in or around Boston, please do get involved!

Hear you soon!

Y

P.S. Ok, we are a user group.
